As much sociology, geography and history as a work of literature, Os Sert?es was lauded as a significant work of literature immediately after publication in late 1902. Drawing on his experience working as a journalist covering the war, da Cunha not only tells the story of the war, its background and its context, but in the process he explores the people of the region, their environment and their culture, providing exceptional insight into Brazilian history and culture.
